Run on, spin out for solo hammered dulcimer (2019)
Anthony McIntosh commissioned Run on, spin out in the summer of 2019, right when I was starting to figure out how his brain works. When Anthony talks, he seamlessly moves from one topic to another, and goes on chains of tangents that take you far away from where you started in no time at all. In Run on, spin out, I tried to mimic him, eliding 5 mini-themes into one moto perpetuo burst of music. But rather than moving on to a new topic (as Anthony might), I imagined this musical run-on sentence bouncing around in a small room, turning over on itself, echoing, and eventually dissipating.
