This beautiful, frigid night for jazz ensemble (2019)

"This beautiful, frigid night" composed by Louis Raymond-Kolker world premiere performance by the UNL Jazz Orchestra April 24, 2019 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Dr. Greg Simon, director David Besonen, alto sax Doug Pierce, flugelhorn Andrew Wray, drumset

This beautiful, frigid night is a composition for large jazz ensemble inspired by the cognitive dissonance in knowing that people are constantly moving through the world, but only being able to see a cold, still winter night. Throughout the piece, swirling layered saxophone entrances imitate flurries of snowflakes, and the “background” image grows more insistent, demanding attention.

This beautiful, frigid night was composed for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Jazz Orchestra, and premiered in April 2019.
