unfurling core for saxophone quartet (2017)

Program Notes:

unfurling core is a saxophone quartet in three continuous sections. The title comes from the image of a puzzle ball: when it's put together correctly, it looks like a sphere, but as it deconstructs, different parts jut out and interlock in different ways. The surface level of the music is smooth and clear, but as it unfurls, the texture gets more dissonant and angular. Finally, the sphere reassembles, as bits of earlier music fly back into place, and the core itself is resolved, now with a deeper understanding of the interior.
